parachronistic: (what i gotta do to'em)
It's not unusual for Kana to look up from the mat and see an outsized hand waving to her from the side of the room with an equally outsized smile waiting when she meets his eyes. It's always a pleasant surprise, though, and--while she'd never tell him or his grandmother this--just a little bit moreso when he comes alone. It means Teppei-kun's time is his own for the day and he still made the decision to come by and see Kana. She doesn't have a lot of time to look away from the mat so it's just a quick glance up but it gives her plenty of motivation to finish the match in a hurry.

Not that that means she suddenly trounces her opponent. On the contrary, she loses her fourth consecutive match of the day but that's what she gets for insisting on training with Harada-sensei today. He's very good and particularly aggressive today, but after they finish she sits for several minutes while he talks her through her swing and asks if she's putting in time toward the memorization exercises he's shown her. She does try but without the pressure of a match timer she's easily distracted thinking about the poems themselves. Kana's still convinced that her connection to the poem's imagery will help her in the long run when it comes to memorization, but in the short run thinking about maple leaves or flowing seagrass or snowy peaks only eats up precious time.

Today the image in her mind as she stands and bows to her teacher is of a waterfall. She always thinks of that poem lately when she sees Teppei. She likes the connection of the images: Teppei as the summit (of course, the little bit of wordplay just pleases her even more), love flowing from him in all sorts of directions but deepest to Haruka, the girl in love with the water. Their romance is so beautiful. The pain of distance, the stoic sad tolerance of loyal hearts, the light in Teppei's eyes when he returns from a visit to see her. It all seems very fitting and it makes her smile as she steps away from the other players toward her friend.

"Teppei-kun! To what do I owe the pleasure?" She knows there doesn't need to be a reason but she'll ask anyway.
